Well-Being Wednesdays: Anna Onea

When I tell people that I can eat half a watermelon in one sitting, most are surprised. Many don’t believe me, until they witness me do it in front of their eyes. Eating an abundance of fruit every day without worrying about putting on weight and without feeling guilty about all that "sugar" is a foreign concept to most people. But not to Anna Onea, we all know about Loni Jane and Freelee the banana girl... and Anna Onea has joined them and jumped on "The Banana Girl Diet." bandwagon. Drinking 9 banana smoothies for breakfast, chowing down on 9-10 oranges for lunch, this girl isn't afraid of putting on any weight by eating too much "sugar". A fellow earthling and body-loving expert who is filled with nothing but love and kindness; it's really no wonder Anna has nearly 7000 followers behind her, their mouths watering at each and every one of her vibrant fruit filled posts on instagram. Anna is an inspiration, someone to admire... better yet she is my soul sister and I love her! and I know you are all going to love her too. Say hello to Anna!

Name? Anna Onea (pronounced oh-nee-ah) Age? 17 (18 in two weeks’ time!!!) Where do you live? Melbourne, Australia What initiated your healthy life style? And/or how did it start? I have always been quite healthy and active, but I became more conscious and pro-active about my choices when I decided to go vegan and mostly raw in June this year after doing a lot of research and watching a lot of documentaries. What does health mean to you and why is it important? Health goes so far beyond just eating ‘healthy’ foods, Health is also your relationship with your food. Are you eating this food to nourish yourself and grow? Health is so multi-faceted, and is as much about your mental well-being as much as your physical. Having a positive outlook on life and yourself is so important to keep a healthy and balanced lifestyle. No one person is the definition of health, and we all have different views on what is healthy and what is not, it all comes down to whether you are doing what is best for your own body and soul
When on the run, what are your go to meals and snacks? BANANAS, I love bananas! They have their own little perfect packaging and keep me going all day long. Also any fresh fruits which are in season are perfect for snacking or on the go, I’m loving fresh berries at the moment! What aspects are in-adaptable when it comes to your diet? Being a vegan, my number one priority is not to eat any animal products and to make sure that what I consume is not contributing to the exploitation of people or animals. I always try to eat foods that are a whole and as natural as possible and to avoid foods that have been altered too much by man.
Are there any people who inspired you to make this lifestyle choice and/or who you admire? There’s no one particular person that I look up to, but every day I am inspired by the wonderful people on instagram who are changing their lives and the lives of others. I feel so blessed to be part of such a great community of complete strangers who are always looking out for each other and trying to help others improve their lifestyle and achieve their goals. What is your favourite live-by quote? “Every morning when we wake up we have 24 brand new hours to live… We have the capacity to live in a way that these 24 hours will bring peace, joy and happiness to ourselves and others” – Thich Nhat Hanh. It’s just a reminder that we wake up with a clean slate every morning and each day is a chance to enjoy, live and spread love to others What is your favourite way to stay active? I absolutely love yoga, such a beautiful way to stay fit, work on strength and flexibility and bring inner peace to yourself. Also group sports are an awesome way to enjoy exercise. Start a netball or volleyball team with your friends, it doesn’t matter whether you’re good or not, it’s a lot of fun, a good way to keep in touch with your friends and awesome for your body What are your top 3 tips to stay healthy, happy and positive? 1. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS. I cannot stress this enough. Seriously. Just stop. Rather than trying to be better than somebody else, just focus on becoming a better version of yourself every day and you will feel much more fulfilled. 2. Eat good, feel good. What you eat has a huge impact on your mood, so think “Will this food nourish my body? Will it help your body heal and give you energy?” Make sure you eat ENOUGH (screw serving sizes) and make peace with your food, a lot of people aren’t lucky enough to have this simple pleasure like we do. 3. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring and stimulating people! Find friends that support you and uplift you throughout all of your decisions and people that can make you laugh. There’s nothing better than a good group of friends (this includes your family!) Why is self-love important? We live in a society where we are constantly bombarded with images of women (and men for that matter) portraying an idealistic ‘woman’, what we should look like. The reality is though, we are all individual, we are all unique and we are all beautiful but many of us don’t see that. This can be very damaging, that’s why I think that realising your own beauty and your own potential is so crucial. We will always come across somebody who has nicer legs/eyes/lips/clothes etc than us so if we are always comparing ourselves to others, we will never find true peace and happiness. Learn to love yourself, your body, your appearance and your life just the way it is because we are so blessed in the lives that we live, and chances are those people who you wish you could look like are also unhappy with themselves. I cannot stress this enough but we are all unique and wonderful beings, and self-love is the key to finding happiness. Treat yourself with kindness, tell yourself you look beautiful and touch your body with kindness, do not poke and the bits that you hate or speak harshly about them. I seriously could go on about this topic forever, but all in all, YOU, yes you, are AMAZING you just have to realise it. What do you hope to achieve in the future/what are your goals? Who knows what the future holds for me! Next year I plan to go travelling overseas and do a little soul searching, but I have so many different things that I could see myself doing. Perhaps working overseas volunteering my time to those in need, maybe something right here in Melbourne, helping people to achieve a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle or even opening my own little vegan/raw vegan cafĂ© and wellness store. I guess only time will tell but until then I just want to enjoy every moment of this beautiful life, meet some wonderful people, eat good food and share as much positivity as I can. If you were trying to persuade someone to join you on your path to a healthy lifestyle, how would you go about doing so? I believe the best way to go about it is leading by example, showing people the benefits of this lifestyle and being a walking advertisement for whatever you believe in, without being arrogant. Especially regarding veganism, people don’t like to be told that what they are doing or how they are living is wrong, and often complain about ‘preachy vegans’ who ‘shove’ opinions down people’s throats. So rather that criticising people for their lifestyle, I just try to show people the wonders of living healthily and cruelty-free and if they want to know more, I’m more than happy to talk to them about it. Do you have any books, resources, or tools for someone aspiring to live a healthy lifestyle? Social media is amazing for surrounding yourself with inspiriation and motivation to kickstart or just maintain your healthy lifestyle. Follow as many healthy instagrams as you can, but beware of some which promote deceivingly unhealthy habits. Some great instagrams that I follow include lonijane, fullyrawkristina, freeleethebananagirl, healthywayshappydays, _rachelbutler, eat_to_thrive, agirlnamedally, of course Demi at happylittleveganmite and there are SO MANY MORE. Watching a few good docos can change your life. I recommend hungry for change, food matters, forks over knives, fat sick and nearly dead. Books: The 801010 diet (you don’t have to take everything in the book very seriously as for some it can be overwhelming, just see what you can apply to your day to day life) The China Study, The Secret. Seriously there is a whole wealth of information out there you just need to start looking for it. Surround yourself health and positivity, follow blogs, watch youtube and don’t be afraid to ask questions! What do you think is the biggest issue with health in our society? This is a tough one, since I feel like there are so many! 1. We are surrounded by so much processed food which is damaging to our health and we have forgotten about the wonderful foods that Mother Nature has provided for us in fruits and vegetables. These processed foods are also much more accessible and cheap than healthier alternatives so are very tempting but are stripped of all nutritional value and loaded with crazy ingredients to keep you wanting more. We need to stop eating out of packets and eat REAL FOOD, just as nature intended it 2. The media and advertising industry has such a large control over the way we live our lives and we don’t even realise it! We are constantly made to feel like we are inadequate so that we buy all these products to make us happier, which in fact make us feel more empty. We are sold unhealthy standards of what we should look like and the only way to get ‘that body’ is to buy a ridiculous diet product that leaves you undernourished. They also sell unhealthy dieting information, like at the moment the high protein crazy or carbohydrate restriction. This is ridiculous as our bodies need carbs to function, and too much protein in the diet can be dangerous, but we all believe what we are told by these companies. 3. The people who decide on our dietary requirements/recommendations are funded by large companies such as meat and dairy companies, so what we’re told is healthy can often be based of the financial benefit of these bodies, rather than the health of the population. This is really just scratching the surface of all of these issues, but this topic could go on for days. What has been your proudest moment on your journey and what has been your most challenging? I love it when people send me messages or leave comments saying that I have inspired them to make healthier changes in their life. Even if it’s a small change like eating more fruits and veggies of going began/vegetarian, it’s all about the small things that add up to make a big difference. The fact that I can influence strangers to lead a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle blows my mind, and there is no feeling like it. It still amazes me that my posts can impact on other peoples’ lives in a good way and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The most difficult thing would have to be dealing with criticism, mostly from people who I know. Many people, especially in school were quick to criticise my lifestyle and particularly the way that I shared it on instagram. Also, it was hard when people, including my family, told me that what I’m doing is ‘crazy’ or ‘extreme’. I haven’t really let any of this affect me though, I know that what I’m doing is right for MY body, so who is anybody else to say that it’s wrong? My lifestyle is not affecting anybody else but me, so why should I listen to what somebody else thinks is the ‘right’ thing to do? How can we find you? You can follow me on instagram at @annaonea or say hello to me on my tumblr anna-onea.tumblr.com Share your favourite recipe? Being a vegan, it’s really important to get enough greens into your diet, so I’m pretty big on salads! A lot of people have trouble making salads interesting while keeping the dressings healthy and preferably low in fat (if you’re following 801010 like myself), so this is a really simple, delicious dressing which is great for salads, raw pad thais or a dipping sauce for yummy rice paper rolls and is also lower in fat than a lot of raw vegan dressings. Ingredients: • Juice of one orange and one lemon • Handful of coriander (cilantro) and/or a couple of mint leaves • 1-2 tsp of tahini (more or less depending on your preferences) • Chopped up coin sized piece of ginger • ¼ cup chopped up spring onion Directions: 1. Blend all the ingredients in a blender or a food processor until well combined 2. Pour over your salad, pad thai or serve as a dipping sauce with rice paper rolls
In the photo: Veggie rice paper rolls with the dipping sauce. I also love making rice-paper rolls because they are a great way to include more raw veggies into your diet. Just chop up your desired veggies into strips (I love the colour of purple cabbage), prepare rice paper as per instructions, add your veggies, avocado, fresh herbs like mind or coriander, tempeh (optional), wrap them up and devour them!

Melbourne Part 2

After already experiencing amazing food and meeting wonderful people, I didn’t think it could get much better… but it did.

Pressed Juices
On my second day in Melbourne I made my way to pressed juices, something I had been looking forward to for months, as in Brisbane they are unheard of. Though very expensive the juices, mylks and smoothies were unreal. With a more then accurate description
Pressed Juices extracted by cold pressing is the most nutritionally complete juice available, and contains up to 5 times more vitamins, minerals and enzymes than juice made by any other method.  Each morning our fresh produce is slowly cold pressed - no additives, no pasteurisation or preservatives, just live juice - and immediately bottled to ensure a shelf life of up to 3 days when refrigerated.  Whether you're interested in a detox or cleanse program, or a daily juice to get in more servings of fruit and vegetables, Pressed Juices can help you feel your best both physically and mentally.”  And yet a better slogan, “positively life changing” I was hooked and don’t know if that’s was a  good thing or bad thing $$$ unfortunately for my wallet, there was a store right on the street of my hotel, and most mornings after running 5 km in the park, I stopped on the way back too my hotel to buy a juice. The menu is huge, and every morning I had lots of trouble deciding which one I wanted. Luckily though, the taste testing option was available and after annoying the employees every morning by asking for a dozen taste tests, I was always able to make a decision. I tried multiple but purchased, earth 3 (apple, beetroot, ginger, lemon) earth 4 (apple, carrot, ginger) antiox 3 (acai, blood orange, passionfruit, lucuma) And the delish choc almond mylk (almonds, cacao, dates, filtered water, sea salt) I did taste test a few of the green ones and really didn’t like them, I’m more of a carrot juice gal and I think that is why My favourite was earth 4, with the runner up being the chocolate almond mylk, as it really tasted like actual chocolate milk. If you’re in Melbourne I recommend checking pressed juices out, they are expensive but you have to try at least one! And the flavour explosion is totally worth it. There are a few located in Melbourne but the one I frequently visited was on Collins St in the city.

Camberwell Sunday market
I also headed to the Queen Victoria market with my mum, it was crazy, but I LOVED IT! As there is nothing like it in Brisbane, they had everything and anything from a deli to an organic section with a loving earth stall selling loving earth products at wholesale prices. It reminded me of the Paddington markets in Sydney. We bought some organic fruit and vegetables and headed to the Camberwell Sunday market, which is like a suitcase rummage for you Brisbane folk. We got there a little bit late as they are open from 8am – 12pm every Sunday and we got there at 11.30, though we were late mum found some good finds. I’d recommend checking them out if you are in the area and looking for some cheap, vintage second hand finds.

PANA CHOCOLATE

The next day was spent shopping on the famous chapel street, visiting the famous St Kilda beach which was beautiful and eating fruit from the queen victoria market. We also made a visit to the Pana Chocolate shop in Richmond. Hidden away on church street, this little shop is home to the
RAW ORGANIC HANDMADE. Australian Pana Chocolates, the shop stocks house-made raw pana chocolate cheesecakes and a variety of raw chocolates. They also sell hot chocolates, coconut water and spring water. The chocolates stocked in the shop are very different to the chocolate bars on the shelves in Australia. Besides the staff being rude the chocolates mum and I purchased and the cake we shared was delicious. We purchased a lavender and maqui chocolate, a raw salted peanut butter chocolate and a raw raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake to share.

MONK BODHI DHARMA

On Tuesday I met the gorgeous Anna and we made our way to balaclava to check out the famous Monk Bodhi Dharma.
After seeing many posts from some of the fantastic Melbourne vegan blogs I follow on instagram I knew I had to check out Monk Bodhi dharma. Before I even got there I knew what I wanted to share with Anna. The creamy mushrooms and the vegan buckwheat pancakes, and they were exactly what we got. The gorgeous Monk Bodhi Dharma is nestle in a little alley way in Carlisle St, the staff are super friendly… but what makes the place is the A+ vegan brunch options. The menu is small but the quality of the dishes makes up for it.  The creamy
UMAMI MUSHROOMS
(Slow roasted king oyster, shitake, oyster & swiss brown mushrooms on a house made pumpkin, spinach & sun dried tomato polenta bread) were delicious, creamy and perfect on the cold morning in Melbourne; the house-made polenta was divine and paired with the creamy mushrooms made a satisfying dish.  Due to the variety of mushrooms and being paired pumpkin bread, the flavours were insane! I would definitely recommend to a savoury breakfast lover! Though the mushrooms were crazy good the AVIGNON APPLE PANCAKES blew my mind, the description doesn’t do them justice. Gluten free Buckwheat apple pancakes served with cinnamon ice cream,
maple syrup, vanilla bean whipped cream and dehydrated apple chips. They were by far the best vegan pancakes I’ve ever tasted, my mother who had them with me on another time we ventured to monk for breakfast said they were the best pancakes she had ever had. They were fluffy but moist and tasted like sweet cinnamon donuts and paired with the raw cold ice-cream, vanilla cream, fresh seasonal fruit and maple syrup it made them a sweet lovers breakfast delight. Being a sweet loving person usually in the morning, these pancakes really hit the spot. Both dishes hit about the $20 dollar mark, but the mammoth portions were worth it.

Monk also does dinner every Friday night and mum and I made sure to book. The menu was small, but the dishes made up for it. They had a variety of raw and cooked dishes, entrees, mains and desserts. We ordered the raw carrot and corn wraps for entrĂ©e, the wraps where dehydrated and filled with a raw vegan pesto and various seasonal raw vegetables. They were nice, but the wraps themselves were soggy and were hard to enjoy. For the mains I ordered the raw vegan falafel plate and mum order the European plate. They were massive! I loved my dish, there were raw crackers, raw falafels, raw olives, a trio of raw dips (raw hummus, raw beetroot dip and a raw vegan tzatziki) it reminded me of raw pizza I had previously had a naked treaties in Byron Bay, it was super delicious. Mums dish was average, it included cabbage wraps filled with rice, beans, and stuffed capsicum. I tasted the beans and they were nice, but the rest of the dish just didn’t sit with me. For such a $$$ price the dish wasn’t worth it. For dessert we shared the raw vegan deconstructed snickers, it was delicious but there was to much chocolate, in which we left, however the combination of raw vanilla ice cream, peanuts, raw caramel nougat and raw chocolate paired perfectly, it was super rich, so I would recommend sharing.

If you are in need of a delicious healthy breakfast you have the head to Monk Bodhi Dharma they have the best vegan pancakes ever created in existence.

The Staple Store
After breakfast Anna and I headed of to the The Staple Store, a health food shop hidden in the suburb of Ripponlea, which I had been excited to visit for months. Known for their raw vegan oreos, this little shop filled of wholesome goodies is probably the best health food shop in Australia. Giddy with excitement we both headed in I immediately started placing stuff in my basket, pats and veg sauerkraut, various dried fruits, staple stores Bircher muesli (freeze dried watermelon, dehydrated blood oranges, inca berries, gf oats, loving earth raw chocolate, sour cherries and so much more) Sprouted millet bread, the staple stores super food butter and of course raw oreoes, they had a variety of flavours including strawberry and goji, vanilla and macca, cacao, peppermint and espresso. $50 later Anna and I left happy with our purchases.  During my stay in Melbourne I tried the vanilla and maca rawreo, the cacao and coconut rawreo and the goji and strawberry rawreo. All were delicious but my favourite was the vanilla and maca. The staple store was incredible; they literally had everything in bulk, from loving earth buckinis to dehydrated oranges. They also had nearly every single raw chocolate available, a variety of delicious wholegrain breads, including deeks quinoa bread and sprouted millet and vege bread, a variety of spreads including raw vegan nutella and house made super food butters, a variety of dried fruits, coconut yogurts and HEALTHY baking mixes for loaves, cookies, bliss balls and bars. They just had so much I can’t mention it all. I also love the fact that they emphasis recycling and being kind to the environment. If you are in Melbourne, you must stop at the staple store! The lovely owner caity, her staff and the little health food shop is a must stop for the health conscious visiting Melbourne.

We enjoyed our raweos in the park and shopped till we dropped on Chapel Street, the following day I once a gain met up with Anna and we headed to Shoku iku, One of the places that I had been dying to visit.

Shoku Iku
“Shoku iku is not your ordinary cafe/shop. it is a place to learn and experience this dynamic way of eating. Introducing raw food and living food to you, using healing organic/biodynamic ingredients, emphasizing the importance on fruits, vegetables and whole natural foods and also the use of "super foods" and "super herbs" We create our dishes using seasonal 100 % organic or chemical free ingredients, which promotes our strong belief of consciousness, well beings and sustainability for ourselves and the planet. The water used for out drinks and meals are filtered with reduced fluoride and other chemicals found in tap water. All of our nuts and seeds are activated for the maximum nutrition and digestibility. All our sweetener’s are as close to nature as possible. No refined sugar or over processed syrup including agave syrup are used.”

The description on Shoku Ikus website fits the little cafes aura, atmosphere and food perfectly. Nestled on high street in Northcote, it would be easy to miss this little beauty, but boy you really wouldn’t want to pass it by. Every day the menu is different, its simple where you either order a large or small raw organic mixed lunch, you can also purchase raw desserts that are made on the day, a range of smoothies and any raw items they have in the cafĂ© for sale at the time (probiotic yogurt, raw cacao mulberries ect). The cafĂ© is also open for dinner on a Saturday night as well as brunch Saturday and Sunday. The small organic mixed lunch is $12 and the large is $15 though the options are limited the delicious food makes up for it. On the day Anna and I were the mixed lunch was cashew and butternut pumpkin salad, silver beet and carrot salad with apple cider and spinach dressing, leaf salad with zucchini and apple flax leather, house-made sauerkraut and quinoa and chia crackers with cashew cream. The mix was incredible and tied with Yong green food for the best lunch I’ve ever had. Shoku Iku is the best raw cafĂ© I’ve ever been too, the lunch was light and refreshing, not too creamy and really hit the spot. We also shared a green smoothie and a raw banana cacao cream cake, the cake was divine, but both Anna and I agreed that the smoothie tasted too much like green supplement powder. The cake was the best I’ve tried, it reminded me of the ice-cream cakes I used to have as a kid. Not only was the lunch incredibly delicious, the staff were super friendly, the whole atmosphere and aura of the cafĂ© was welcoming, the benches were covered in crystals and I really just felt a sense of peace.

Before I knew it my trip was nearly over. After enjoying a delicious dinner at monk on my last night in Melbourne, on our way back to our hotel we saw a protest going on, to ban McDonalds, it was the funniest and most inspiring thing I had seen in a long time. It made me happy that even though everyone around the group of people protesting was giving them grief about what they were doing they continued to smile and fight for what they believed in. I was starting to feel sad though as I realized my wonderful trip was coming to an end. On my last day, I made my way to the Queen victoria market to say my good-byes to Ally and Anna, I had the day before gotten friendship bracelets made for us, the girls loved them. It was sad knowing I wouldn’t see two of my soul sisters for a very long time. Whilst at the markets Ally bought me the new raw vegan caramel chocolate from the loving earth stall there, it was and is seriously so delicious.  Anna had to go to work so Ally and I headed to the staple store to share rawreos together and to Yong green food for my last lunch, ally had recently gotten her wisdom teeth out so was unable to eat anything and had a smoothie whilst I enjoyed a delicious macro dragon bowl.

We parted ways and I headed to Chapel Street after hearing Isabelle Cornish, a healthy body imagine advocate, actress and model, and one of the many women I look up to was going to be at a shoe store there. Nervous and excited I headed into the shoe shop and found myself start struck, in the only voice I could master (small and squeaky) I introduced myself as so did she and I asked for a photo, she said she loved my outfit and had the same overalls as me… I couldn’t say anything, as I would dumb founded and ended up running out of the store! I then ended up blowing some money at top shop as I was in a daze and headed over to an organic froyo place to meet up with calypso and Isabel one last time before I left. It was called Frozen by a thousand blessings on Chapel Street. I had an organic probiotic mango vegan froyo with various toppings. (They had a huge range of organic toppings including house-made granola, fresh, stewed and dried fruit)  After chatting for a while I made my way back to the hotel, ready to head home. I had packed a chocolate almond mylk, raw oreo and a big big fruit salad for the flight. I’m glad I did as the flight home was not as long as I anticipated…

Because of the extremes storms in Brisbane, our two hour flight back home became a 5 hour one as we had to stop in Sydney to refuel as we didn’t have enough fuel to fly around Brisbane waiting for the storm to pass over. Though I was mad I made an effort not to be as it could have been worse, we could have crashed due to the storm and the pilot was doing everything he could to keep us safe. We ended up hitting Brisbane’s shores at around midnight and I happily drifted off to sleep once we arrived home.

Melbourne is literally a vegan haven and I know I will be back, again and again. The culture, the food, the people and the city were everything I hoped and expected. I one day know I will be calling Melbourne my home. If you are vegan or ever if you are not please whilst you are in Melbourne check out the places I mentioned, they are all super duper amazing! Till next time melb!

Melbourne Part One

I have been a bit MIA lately, but now I can gladly say that I will posting a heck of a lot more, in the next couple of weeks I will be posting recipes, interviewing some amazing and inspiring souls and will be answering the many questions I get asked from my followers. Why have I been so slack though? Well… because I’ve been in Melbourne! This post and the following will be dedicated to the 7 days I spent in the beautiful city.  I enjoyed some delicious food at some of the best vegan restaurants/cafĂ©s in Australia and met up with some of the most beautiful girls that really are my soul sisters.

ON November the 16th At the crack of dawn, stuffed to the brim with watermelon and coconut water and with a heavy suitcase filled with various clothes and shoes (including 5 pairs of overalls) My mother and I made our way to the Brisbane airport, to board the much anticipated flight to Melbourne. Whilst waiting and sipping on a green juice we were finally able to board our plane, the plane ride was pleasant, not to much turbulence… You know what was awesome though? On Qantas airlines whether domestic or international you get a meal… that’s not what the awesome part  is though… the awesome part is you can pre book what meal you want and they have a raw vegan option? Yes a raw vegan option…. Where they give you an abundance of fruit whether that is dried canned or fresh… both there and back I was shocked by how good quality the fruit was! On the way there it was breakfast time, so I was given on a tray water, pineapple, grapes and rock melon (not the best food combining but I wasn’t complaining) On the way home the portion was bigger  as it was dinner (thank goodness) there was once again water, pineapple. rock melon and grapes but this time with an additional banana, peach, half a passion fruit and nectarine, half a strawberry and a date (score)  It was wicked.

After a two hour flight, listening to the likes of Katy Perry and Imagine Dragons we finally made it to Melbourne. Giddy with excitement for the plans I had previously made,  I was on a high. I was going to yong green food with Ally  (agirlnamedally on instagram) and Anna (annaonea on instagram) two gorgeous girls I had been talking to for months, via text, letters and various forms of communication.
I met up with them near my hotel (after getting a little lost, going to our meeting place) and we jumped on a tram to Brunswick, Fitzroy where the gorgeous little Yong Green Food was nestled.

YONG GREEN FOOD

We all decided to share and ordered as many dishes that were socially acceptable. We ordered the buckwheat crepes to start (in which I had heard much about) a side of house-made kimchi, the raw pad thai, the dragon macro bowl and two drinks the banana and cacao shake and the green leaves juice.

Let me just say it was the best meal I’ve ever had (shared or not) each dish was an explosion of flavour and I just wanted more and more.  The green juice was delicious and refreshing, but the shake had a bit too much cacao, Anna agreed but Ally loved it! The drinks were nothing compared to the meals though. The raw pad thai was incredible, described as “kelp noodles mixed with organic veggies and a creamy cashew chilli sauce. Topped with activated tamari almonds" it had the perfect ratio of vegetable to kelp noodles, it wasn’t to creamy and the tamari almonds added the perfect flavour punch. It was out of this world, however the macro dragon bowl was just as good or was even better, “Biodynamic brown rice topped with seasonal veggies, organic tempeh and lemon tahini cream served with miso soup.” For such a simple described dish the meal was insane! It contained, the perfect amounts of cabbage, shitake mushrooms, carrots, beansprouts, lettuce, wakame seaweed, rice, tempeh and the right amount of the delicious tahini lemon cream and with the additional miso soup, the dish was an absolute stand out.
Though these dishes were amazing, the BUCKWHEAT CREPES were a winner, never in my life have I tasted something so light and delicious. “Organic buckwheat crepe with braised mushrooms, veggies and served with a wasabi sauce” The crepes were thin, light and delicious and had the perfect amount of vegies inside and the sauce around them was packed full of flavour. They where amazing and every time I went to yongs during my stay I made sure to order the crepes.  The house-made kimchi was also delicious.

During the rest of the week I revisited yongs many times and found it hard to stray from the meals I ordered with Anna and Ally, I did however try the rawsanga and the raw white chocolate cheesecake. I also met up with Isabelle (belbelmusic on instagram), Isabella (funfreshandhealthy on instagram) and Calypso (calypsoscarlett on instagram) for lunch at yongs. The rawsanaga was the best raw lasagne I’ve ever tried.  “Layered zucchini with mushroom, avocado, cashew cream and a raw walnut Bolognese” It was creamy, super filling and packed full of flavor, a meal that would be great for those that are health conscious and craving there lasagne. If you’re in Melbourne you have to check out Yong green food, it’s not an option… it’s a  MUST.

BERRISIMO
After we ate lunch, we headed down Brunswick Street and browsed various vintage shops… we also came across... VEGAN FROYO. I literally was gob smacked we have nothing even remotely close to vegan froyo in Brisbane. Berrissimo had a vegan banana split, vanilla coconut and chocolate mousse flavour and I was told the flavours rotate weekly. I tried both the banana split and vanilla coconut on various occasions and it was delicious! It was also very well priced with $5.80 for a generous" small" serving of as many flavours as one desires.  If your in Melbourne, vegan or not and craving some delicious inexpensive froyo, you have to check out berrissimo.

VEGIE BAR
We also checked out the Spanish festival, I bought some cool pants and we parted our ways home. For dinner, Mum wanted to go out, so I thought after trying yong green we would go out to Vegie bar, I had the raw tacos, and unfortunately wasn’t a fan of them, the flavours and textures were all wrong and just didn’t sit with me however during my stay in Melbourne I went back twice and tried the raw living stack and the greens stir-fry with tempeh and satay sauce.  The raw living stack was delicious the tomato and basil pesto layered with various raw vegetables and topped with crispy cheesy kale chips really hit the spot. The stir-fry was good and was a generous serving for the price, it was simple and tasty, something I could recreate at home. The vibe and atmosphere of the vegie bar was lovely, lots of veggie heads enjoying vegan or vegetarian meals together, chatting over cider, smoothies and young coconuts. A place Brisbane definitely needs. If you are looking for a nice, inexpensive dinner being that raw or cooked and a good friendly vibe you should check out vegie bar.
